Will Marlins Trade Top-Star Winner This Winter? Insider Reveals Team’s 2025 Plan

The Miami Marlins have grown so accustomed to trading away players that it’s hard to envision any of their star athletes remaining with the team.

Already departed are Luis Arraez, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Tanner Scott, Bryan De La Cruz, and Trevor Rogers. The Marlins appear focused on the long term, acquiring numerous prospects at this season’s trade deadline.

Given their trading strategy, it’s natural to speculate about whether other key players will be dealt, particularly Cy Young Award winners.

This brings us to Sandy Alcantara, the Marlins’ ace, who is sidelined for the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery. However, one insider suggests that Alcantara may be an exception to the Marlins’ usual pattern.

Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reported on X that the Marlins have reassured Alcantara he won’t be traded.

“The Marlins have informed 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara that he will not be traded this offseason, per sources,” Mish stated. “As his rehabilitation progresses well, the expectation is that Alcantara will be Miami’s Opening Day starter in 2025.”

At 28 years old, Alcantara is under contract through at least 2026, with a club option for 2027. He led the majors in complete games in both 2022 and 2023 and is set to be a cornerstone of the team’s young rotation.

Notably, Alcantara’s salary will jump significantly from this season to next. He is earning $9.3millionin2024,butthatfigurerisesto$ 17.3 million in 2025 and 2026.

His extension was the largest the Marlins have given since their $ 325 million deal with Giancarlo Stanton in 2014. Miami then traded Stanton to the Yankees in 2018, just before his contract’s value increased.

If the Marlins follow through on their promise, Alcantara will be a key part of their quest for playoff contention. However, constant rebuilding raises ongoing questions about the team’s commitment to keeping its stars.
