Michigan Wolverines’ push to steal top QB from Big Ten rival shows progress
Michigan’s revamped coaching staff is already making moves to land their next elite quarterback recruit, aiming to execute a high-profile flip.
After significant changes under Kyle Whittingham, including a full coaching overhaul and a new general manager, the Wolverines had to restructure their recruiting approach across multiple classes.
Last month, they faced a major setback when 2027 four-star quarterback Peter Bourque—a top-10 QB nationally and Massachusetts’ No.1 player—decommitted. Bourque had initially pledged under former coach Sherrone Moore, but Whittingham’s staff wasn’t the right fit for him.
Despite this, Michigan quickly identified a new target: four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati, currently committed to the Illinois Fighting Illini and ranked as the No.9 QB in the 2027 class.
Lopati, from Utah, was once a priority for Whittingham during his tenure at Utah, and with much of his staff now in Ann Arbor, Michigan is working to keep him in the Big Ten—but with the Wolverines. Their efforts are showing results, as Lopati has confirmed plans to attend Michigan’s “Victors Weekend,” one of their premier recruiting events.
Lopati is the No.2 player in Utah and the 122nd overall in the 2027 class per Rivals’ composite rankings. As a junior, he threw 114-of-176 passes for 2,671 yards with 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while also rushing 90 times for 730 yards and 10 touchdowns.
