As Mizzou prepares for Saturday’s showdown with UMass, one crucial area needing attention is their ability to finish drives with touchdowns. This issue has plagued the Tigers for the past two seasons, having significantly hindered their progress during the first five games of this year.

Last season, Mizzou was impressive in the red zone, scoring on 56 out of 58 drives and ranking third nationally in scoring percentage. However, they only converted 36 of those drives into touchdowns, achieving a 62% touchdown rate.

This year is following a similar pattern, with the team scoring on 20 of their 21 red-zone trips. The downside? They’ve only secured 13 touchdowns from those drives, maintaining that same 62% touchdown rate as last season.

Coach Drinkwitz has acknowledged this challenge, highlighting it as an essential focus for Mizzou if they want to regain their winning form this season.

“In the red zone, we haven’t been effective in the power four games,” Drinkwitz noted. “There are various fixable issues, and if we can address those, everything else may start to improve. We need to enhance our red-zone performance.”
