The Dallas Cowboys are in a challenging position during their bye week. After a painful blowout loss to Detroit on Jerry Jones’ birthday, the team is looking for solutions, sitting at a 3-3 record. Former NFL player Andrew Hawkins criticized Jones as a general manager by referencing a recent trade.
On “The Get Up,” Hawkins pointed out that Amari Cooper was traded to the Buffalo Bills for just a third-round pick. He noted that the Cowboys had traded Cooper three years ago for a fifth-rounder after initially acquiring him for a first-round pick. “Consider this: he’s three years older, on a team that’s struggling, yet they received more in compensation now than the Cowboys did back when he was at his peak,” Hawkins said. “In an offseason where all other wide receivers traded brought back first-round picks, this is poor general managing—period.”
Hawkins makes strong points in his assessment of Jones. He highlights how top wide receivers like AJ Brown, Tyreek Hill, and Davante Adams were traded for substantial draft capital, all while incurring significant salary cap hits or requiring contract extensions post-trade.
It’s worth noting that Jones is the only owner in the NFL also serving as the general manager. While he has had some successes in that role, he does not match the expertise of other talent evaluators in the league.

Jerry Jones is still venting his frustration after the Cowboys suffered a heavy defeat to the Lions on his birthday.
During a Tuesday radio interview, Jones went on an intense tirade, even calling himself an “idiot” for purchasing the Cowboys.
“Buying the Cowboys was one of the dumbest decisions I’ve ever made, and anyone who analyzes it would agree. It was a foolish move, but sometimes those ‘idiot’ decisions can turn out well,” Jones said during the broadcast. “Conversely, what seems like a smart decision can end up being a bad one. The truth is, when you make a move, you can’t predict its outcome at the time. If you want to talk this morning, here it is.”
Jones also reacted sharply when questioned about why he didn’t take more action during the offseason to strengthen the roster.
“That’s not your role. Your job isn’t to list all the reasons behind my decisions or apologize for them. I can find someone else to ask those questions. I’m serious. Your insights won’t reveal what the team is doing right or wrong. If you think they do, then you should join the NFL meeting I’m attending today with 32 other teams. Clearly, you’d be a genius.”
The entire Cowboys organization, including Jerry Jones, needs to get their act together quickly if they want to salvage the 2024 season.
