The Detroit Red Wings needed a big win to keep pace in the early goings of the Atlantic Division race, and they got one. But it also means something else.
A few days ago, there were rumors that the Red Wings were still interested in goaltender Ville Husso. However, after their recent 5-2 victory over the Nashville Predators, that narrative seems to have shifted. Goaltender Alex Lyon had a standout performance, making 37 saves and boasting a 0.949 save percentage in this game. He’s been off to a strong start this season with a 0.929 save percentage and a 2.11 GAA. While Lyon had a breakout year last season, some doubted his ability to replicate that success due to his limited NHL experience.
But those doubts have been put to rest—for now. Lyon’s performance looks solid, and with Cam Talbot also joining the team, the Red Wings have a reliable goaltending duo, regardless of any lingering rumors about Husso’s future.
It’s time for the Red Wings to officially move on from Ville Husso. It didn’t take long into the season for everyone in Hockeytown to see how poorly he’s been playing. Currently, he ranks lower than netminders like Alexandar Georgiev (Colorado Avalanche) and Tristan Jarry (Pittsburgh Penguins), who have struggled as well.
With Talbot’s solid play in his first few games and Lyon’s impressive showing, Husso should be the odd one out moving forward. The Red Wings need to find a new home for him; right now, I wouldn’t even classify him as reliable organizational depth, no matter how well he’s performed in the AHL.
Additionally, trading Husso could be beneficial as a goaltender-needy team might overpay for him if they show interest. While it might seem far-fetched, there’s a belief that he could thrive elsewhere, and NHL executives are aware of his past potential. As long as he isn’t tied to a hefty salary, which isn’t the case with Husso, teams often take a chance on players who haven’t found their fit.
