On Wednesday, the Houston Texans signed former Pro Bowl linebacker Devin White, who was let go by the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this month.

The Eagles had originally signed White to a one-year, $ 4 million deal in free agency, but he remained inactive for the team’s first four games and missed the fifth game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—his former team—due to personal reasons.

A source informed ESPN’s Tim McManus that the Eagles decided to release him before the trade deadline, allowing him to avoid waivers and choose his next team.

White, 26, spent his first five seasons with the Buccaneers, earning a spot on the NFL All-Rookie Team in 2019. In 2020, he led the team with 140 total tackles (97 solo), recorded 9 sacks, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, and defended 4 passes during the regular season. Although he missed the wild-card playoff game due to COVID-19, he topped the Bucs in postseason tackles with 38 (27 solo), along with 2 fumble recoveries and 2 interceptions, including a pick-six against Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl LV win.

He earned his only Pro Bowl selection in 2021, finishing the season with 128 tackles and 3.5 sacks. In 2022, he continued to perform well, recording 124 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

Last season, he started 13 games, amassing 83 tackles and 2.5 sacks, but struggled with foot and groin injuries. As a result, he was replaced in the starting lineup by K.J. Britt toward the end of the season. White requested a trade before last year but ultimately played for the Bucs under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract.
