Josh Heupel doesn’t take kindly to Alabama’s accusations against Vols
Tennessee coach Josh Heupel expressed surprise at accusations from Alabama following the Volunteers’ 24-17 victory over the Crimson Tide. He has addressed claims made by Alabama radio broadcaster Chris Stewart, who alleged that Neyland Stadium utilized artificial crowd noise during the game.
Stewart suggested that crowd noise was amplified at Neyland to enhance the atmosphere, which sparked controversy. Heupel strongly denied these claims and encouraged the Volunteer fanbase to rally around the team, as reported by On3.
In his weekly press conference, Heupel refuted the notion that Neyland Stadium needed any kind of artificial enhancement to maintain its renowned game-day atmosphere. “Neyland doesn’t need anything fake piped into the stadium for that to be the loudest place in America. Hopefully, our fans take that personally,” he stated.
According to the On3 Sports report, Heupel urged Tennessee fans to “take that personally” and elevate their support even further. He called on them to return after the bye week with even greater enthusiasm.

The controversy arose from Stewart’s play-by-play commentary during the game, where he mentioned, “You’ve got 100,000-plus and they also pipe in crowd noise as well.”
Later, on a radio show in Birmingham, Stewart tried to clarify his comments, explaining that he had misspoken and intended to say “amplified” crowd noise instead of suggesting anything deceptive. He noted that Neyland Stadium uses speakers near the field, which, in his opinion, contributed to the intensity of the atmosphere, although his initial wording led to some misunderstanding.
Tennessee now has a bye week to rest and recover before their next game against Kentucky on November 2. Heupel hopes to see Neyland Stadium buzzing again as the team faces challenging opponents in the coming weeks.
With a record of 6-1, the Volunteers are in a strong position to vie for an SEC Championship and potentially contend for a College Football Playoff spot.
In contrast, Alabama now has two losses and will face Missouri this weekend, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. E.T. on ABC.
