Chicago Cubs Sign Pitcher Peter Solomon to Minor League Deal for Depth
The Chicago Cubs have bolstered their pitching depth by signing right-handed pitcher Peter Solomon to a minor league contract. Solomon, 28, brings with him some Major League experience and potential for upside.
The Cubs’ move on Monday comes as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen their pitching staff. According to Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors, the minor league deal with Solomon adds a fresh arm to the organization.
Solomon, a Washington D.C. native, pitched in six games for the Houston Astros in 2021, posting a solid 1.29 ERA over 14 innings. However, his WHIP of 1.28 that year indicated that his performance wasn’t as dominant as the ERA suggested. Solomon returned to the Majors in 2023 with the Arizona Diamondbacks but struggled, posting a 12.15 ERA in five appearances.
With several Cubs pitchers on the injured list—including Javier Assad, Ryan Brasier, Tyson Miller, and Eli Morgan—along with star starter Justin Steele out for the season following Tommy John surgery, Solomon could provide an additional depth option if the team’s pitching woes continue. He will report to Triple-A Iowa, where he has had mixed results in the past. Over four seasons at Triple-A, Solomon has posted a 6.24 ERA with four different organizations, although he showed promise in 2021 with Houston’s Round Rock affiliate, striking out 10.3 batters per nine innings.
The Cubs are hoping Solomon can add valuable depth to their system as they navigate their pitching challenges.
