Brian Gregory takes over Suns, where he’ll work for a player he coached at Michigan State
Former Dayton Flyers head coach Brian Gregory has been named the new general manager of the Phoenix Suns, the team announced Thursday.
James Jones, who had held the GM role since 2019, will transition into a senior advisory position within the organization.
“Brian has been an important part of our front office, especially in the areas of drafting and developing young talent,” Suns owner Mat Ishbia said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to see him take over as general manager. He has a sharp basketball mind and will help take our team to the next level.”
Gregory led Dayton from 2003 to 2011, compiling a 172-94 record. During his tenure, the Flyers reached the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2009, and won the NIT title in 2010.
Gregory went on to coach five years at Georgia Tech and six seasons at South Florida before joining the Suns in 2023. Since June 2024, he has held the position of vice president of player programming.
Suns owner Mat Ishbia and Gregory also share a past connection—Gregory was an assistant coach at Michigan State while Ishbia played for the Spartans from 1999 to 2002 under head coach Tom Izzo.
