Boston Bruins GM Adds Twist to Head Coach Search Amid NHL Playoffs
“Very disappointing day, and also very frustrating as this [is] a reflection of our play,” said then-captain Brad Marchand in November 2024 after the Bruins parted ways with coach Jim Montgomery. At the time, Marchand couldn’t have known that this would mark the start of a catastrophic downfall. Now, with the benefit of hindsight and the knowledge of how the Bruins’ promising 2024-25 season unraveled, they find themselves scrambling to find a new head coach.
Despite interim head coach Joe Sacco stepping in, he was unable to guide the Bruins into the postseason after Montgomery’s departure. As a result, the team remains deep in their search for a permanent replacement. According to long-time Boston Herald reporter Steve Conroy, General Manager Don Sweeney has revealed a new development in the coaching search, linking it to the ongoing NHL playoffs.
“Don Sweeney confirmed that the coaching search is still ongoing. Both Joe Sacco and Jay Leach are still in the running. He also plans to interview someone still active in the playoffs,” Conroy reported. However, Sweeney did not disclose the specific coach he plans to approach from the 2024-25 NHL playoffs, leaving the field wide open for speculation.
Sweeney had previously named Sacco as one of the potential finalists back in April, noting, “He’s aware that we’re going to have a head coaching search, and he knows he’ll be part of the final group we narrow it down to, because I think he’s earned and deserves that.” The other confirmed name in the mix is assistant coach Jay Leach. But with the playoffs still in full swing, more names could be on the horizon.
