Coach Deion Sanders has sparked some rumors about a potential move to professional football, as Colorado is ranked 18th in the AP Top 25 and the Buffaloes seem to have made progress. Even though that may be Sanders’ long-term strategy, according to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz, the coach has not engaged in any formal discussions with anyone regarding joining the NFL.
Nonetheless, Schultz appears to be leaving the possibility open for a potential transition to the NFL, with the journalist pointing out that Sanders is concentrating on achieving success at Colorado for now. Sanders’ chances of joining the NFL depend on a team being willing to hire the controversial coach, and it is important to mention that he is still under contract with Colorado for three more years.
While it’s possible Sanders won’t secure an NFL job this offseason, he will still be making headlines due to his son Shedeur Sanders aiming to be a top draft pick. According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, Barry Sanders Sr. is prepared to intervene if he feels that the “incorrect” team is showing interest in his son.
Deion’s strong impact on Shedeur has caused concern among NFL teams as they evaluate the decision of drafting the Colorado QB. Some executives have doubts about the prospect’s NFL future, with one comparing Shedeur to “Tyrod Taylor 2.0”, but others feel he isn’t “worth all the extra stuff.”
However, there will definitely be a team that is willing to take a risk on the player’s potential, even if it results in Shedeur dropping in the draft rankings. Vincent Bonsignore from the Las Vegas Review-Journal recently highlighted the ties between the Sanders family and the Raiders. Deion has traditionally supported the team, including head coach Antonio Pierce and team president Sandra Douglass Morgan. Shedeur has also received guidance from current part-owner of the Raiders, Tom Brady, and has been seen visiting Las Vegas several times in the current year.
Although it’s not clear if they would meet Deion’s high expectations, the Giants have also been brought up as a possible contender for the quarterback prospect. Representatives from the group went to the University of Colorado recently to personally observe Sanders, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, and assistant general manager Brandon Brown even addressed the Colorado team following the practice.
The Sanders pair will keep grabbing attention in the upcoming weeks, especially if Colorado makes a playoffs bid. Whether good or bad, that won’t be the final time we hear from Deion and Shedeur, as they will remain key figures in the NFL’s offseason.
