The first-year Wolfpack staff recently visited early UNC basketball offer recipient Deron Rippey Jr.

Deron Rippey Jr., the son of a 1990s ECU guard, received an offer from one of his dream schools when UNC basketball coach Hubert Davis reached out in late December. The Tar Heels had shown interest in the 6-foot-2, 175-pound point guard as early as his sophomore year in high school.

However, in his recent analysis of the Blair Academy (N.J.) junior’s impressive recruitment, 247Sports’ Brandon Jenkins did not mention the Tar Heels. He did highlight a rising contender from Tobacco Road: new NC State basketball coach Will Wade, along with his enthusiastic recruitment team, who visited Rippey just last week.

“Alabama, Arkansas, Louisville, NC State, Rutgers, and Syracuse are all deeply engaged,” Jenkins noted on Tuesday after highlighting Rippey’s elite explosiveness and unique instincts displayed during the 3SSB Circuit Session I in Texas over the weekend.

UNC could still be in the running for Rippey; however, Jenkins’ report implies that the Tar Heels may not be in the leading pack at this point.

The 2026 UNC basketball offer list currently features several undecided prospects, the majority of whom are composite five-star players.
