The offseason for the New York Yankees will largely revolve around the pursuit of Juan Soto, but he isn’t the only significant player entering free agency. Starting second baseman Gleyber Torres is now a free agent and might be less inclined to re-sign than Soto. Fortunately for the Yankees, replacing Torres is more manageable. The simplest solution would be to bring him back during free agency. However, Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report suggests that Torres might be on his way to a different team, predicting a one-year deal worth $ 15 million with the Seattle Mariners.
“Throughout his career, whether playing shortstop or second base, the two-time All-Star has not excelled defensively. Yet a team with a need at second base—and perhaps some opportunities at designated hitter—would likely take a chance on him if they believe his best offensive days are ahead,” Kelly remarked. “While Torres might only secure a one-year contract, if he has a breakout season, the team that signs him could extend a qualifying offer next offseason.”
Adding a player like Torres would be a significant boost for the Mariners, especially if he can rediscover his form and hit 30 home runs again. For the Yankees, losing Torres would require them to seek alternatives. They could either trade for a second baseman or transition Jazz Chisholm Jr. to that position while pursuing a third baseman. Star players like Nolan Arenado and Alex Bregman could be viable targets for the Bronx Bombers.
