Analyst Predicts Bengals-Panthers Blockbuster Trade to Strengthen Carolina’s Secondary
The Carolina Panthers may still need to add a safety before the season kicks off. Despite having Trevon Moehrig, Nick Scott, Demani Richardson, and Lathan Ransom in their secondary, the group lacks depth and overall strength. With the draft already in the rearview mirror, the Panthers will likely need to make a trade or dip into free agency—potentially targeting someone like Julian Blackmon—to address this gap.
Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports suggests a trade could be on the horizon. As the Cincinnati Bengals look to free up cap space in order to extend defensive end Trey Hendrickson, Palacios believes they could move safety Geno Stone. With just one year remaining on his contract, Stone is a prime candidate for a trade.
Palacios sees Carolina as an ideal destination if the Bengals decide to part ways with Stone. He praised the Panthers’ work on their defensive line, citing the additions of Tershawn Wharton, Nic Scourton, Princely Umanmielen, and Bobby Brown, as well as the signing of Moehrig. However, he thinks Stone would be a significant upgrade over Nick Scott.
That being said, a trade for Stone seems unlikely at this stage. The Panthers are focused on building their draft capital and may not be willing to part with valuable picks for a player like Stone, especially considering they don’t have the salary cap space to extend him. Signing a free agent like Blackmon might be a safer, more practical move for the Panthers. Still, adding Stone would undeniably improve their secondary.
