On Tuesday, the Dodgers added Jack Dreyer to their 40-man roster, ensuring he won’t be eligible for selection in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft on December 11.
Several prospects who were expected to join the roster, including college draftees from 2021, high school draftees, and international signings from 2020 and earlier, were called up to the majors during the season. Players like Justin Wrobleski, River Ryan, Ben Casparius, and Edgardo Henriquez made their way onto the 40-man roster between July and September.
Dreyer began the 2024 season impressively, allowing just one unearned run in 14⅔ innings for Double-A Tulsa before being promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City in May. The left-handed pitcher continued to perform well at the higher level, posting a 2.95 ERA in 37 appearances, which included four saves and a solid 52 strikeouts against only nine walks over 42⅔ innings.
This season, Dreyer recorded 72 strikeouts while issuing just 12 walks, resulting in a strikeout-minus-walk rate of 26.4%, which was the second-best among all Dodgers minor league pitchers with at least 30 innings, surpassed only by 30-year-old right-hander Michael Petersen, who made his MLB debut in June.
Dreyer demonstrated strong performance against all batters this season, limiting right-handed hitters to a .171/.203/.301 line with 46 strikeouts and five walks. Left-handed batters fared slightly better, hitting .264/.316/.363 against him.
The Dodgers signed Dreyer as an undrafted free agent from Iowa in August 2021. Over his three years in the minors, he has maintained a 2.18 ERA over 124 innings, with a strikeout rate of 32.7%. He will turn 26 in February.
Jack is the son of Steve Dreyer, who pitched for parts of two seasons (1993-94) with the Rangers and celebrated his 55th birthday on the same day that his son was added to the 40-man roster.
Following these transactions, the Dodgers now have 38 players on their 40-man roster, which includes 24 pitchers and 14 position players. Dreyer is one of just five left-handed pitchers on the roster, joining fellow relievers Alex Vesia, Anthony Banda, as well as Wrobleski and Zach Logue.
