Owens played the past three seasons at Central Arkansas.
North Carolina is enhancing its tight end position with the addition of transfer Jordan Owens, who has 18 games of starting experience at the FCS level. Owens informed Inside Carolina that he chose UNC as his transfer destination on Monday.
Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 255 pounds, Owens spent the last three seasons at Central Arkansas, an FCS school, after red-shirting for a year at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. He initially entered the Transfer Portal during the Winter Window, transferring to Oklahoma State. After practicing with the Cowboys this spring, he re-entered the Portal on April 23. Owens has one year of eligibility left.
He officially visited UNC last Wednesday, having also taken an official visit to New Mexico. While he was initially planning to visit Missouri State, he canceled that trip upon committing to the Tar Heels.
Throughout his three years at Central Arkansas, Owens played in 32 games. Last season, he recorded 17 catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns, while the previous year he made seven receptions for 56 yards and three scores. As a red-shirt freshman, he had three catches, two of which were touchdowns.
Owens is the second tight end transfer commitment for North Carolina this spring, joining Arkansas’ Shamar Easter, who committed last week, and he is the third tight end transfer overall for the offseason, following South Carolina’s Connor Cox, who joined the program in January.
The tight end room at UNC will undergo significant changes by 2025, as the notable pair of John Copenhaver and Bryson Nesbit pursue professional careers after combining for 64 receptions, 678 yards, and seven touchdowns last season. The only returning contributor, Jake Johnson, played in 13 games but only recorded two catches for 21 yards. Additionally, reserves Ryan Ward (West Virginia) and Julien Randolph (Austin Peay) have entered the Transfer Portal this spring to play elsewhere next season.
