Cleveland Browns Could Aggressively Target Malik Willis in Free Agency
The Browns are expected to be one of several franchises making a strong push for what could be the top free-agent quarterback in the 2026 class.
According to ESPN analyst Ben Solak, Cleveland is among four teams likely to present competitive offers to Green Bay Packers backup Malik Willis once the new league year opens on March 11. Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Solak connected the dots stylistically, noting that Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken previously worked with Lamar Jackson and runs a system that could suit Willis’ dual-threat skill set.
Solak also identified the Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets as teams expected to pursue Willis aggressively.
Comparing Experience and Market Value
Despite the buzz, Willis has made just six NFL starts. By comparison, Shedeur Sanders started seven games for Cleveland late last season, technically giving him more starting experience with the Browns.
Still, Willis has appeared in 22 career games and has impressed evaluators enough to command a sizable projected contract. Spotrac estimates his market value at roughly $35.5 million annually on a two-year deal totaling $71 million. That projection comes despite modest career numbers: 1,322 passing yards, six touchdowns, three interceptions, a 67.7% completion rate, plus 405 rushing yards and four scores. He owns a 3-3 record as a starter.
Sanders, meanwhile, went 3-4 in eight appearances, completing 56.6% of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, while adding 169 rushing yards and one touchdown.
What It Could Mean for Cleveland’s QB Room
Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot reported that Willis is firmly on the team’s radar as the offseason ramps up. She also noted Cleveland could explore drafting Ty Simpson, viewed as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2026 class behind projected No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza, who is widely expected to land with the Las Vegas Raiders.
If Cleveland selects a rookie quarterback, Sanders would likely compete for the starting role during training camp alongside Deshaun Watson and any incoming addition.
However, should the Browns commit significant money to sign Willis — even with Watson carrying a hefty $80.7 million cap hit in 2026 — it could signal the end of Sanders’ tenure in Cleveland. In that case, the 24-year-old could become a trade candidate before the regular season kicks off.
