Islanders Linked to Potential Trade for Blues Forward Jordan Kyrou
The New York Islanders have performed well enough this season to justify exploring roster upgrades ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline on Friday.
While time is running short to finalize a deal, opportunities may still exist for the Islanders to strengthen their lineup. One possible move could involve the St. Louis Blues.
According to Shayna Goldman of The Athletic, New York could pursue a trade for Blues forward Jordan Kyrou.
Kyrou carries a significant cap hit of about $8.125 million annually, but he would offer more than just a short-term solution. With five years remaining on his contract, he could become a long-term piece for the Islanders rather than a temporary rental.
Goldman noted that this is the first trade deadline for Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche, which adds some uncertainty to how aggressive the team might be. The organization is trying to balance a roster retool that began during the summer with the team’s strong start that has kept them in the playoff race.
Rather than adding short-term rentals, Goldman suggested the Islanders could target a player who helps both immediately and in the future. She pointed out that acquiring a skilled top-six winger should be a priority, and Kyrou fits that profile well.
The 27-year-old forward has appeared in 50 games this season, recording 14 goals and 19 assists. Over eight seasons with St. Louis, Kyrou has accumulated 164 goals and 201 assists for a total of 365 points in 466 games.
Because productive players with long-term contracts rarely become available at the deadline, Kyrou represents a unique opportunity. If the Blues are willing to move him, the Islanders could benefit greatly from adding his scoring ability to their lineup.
