Steelers Reportedly Interested in Super Bowl MVP
The Pittsburgh Steelers could make a surprising move in free agency by targeting the reigning Super Bowl MVP.
With Jaylen Warren already signed for the next two seasons, the Steelers were not expected to pursue one of the top running backs when the NFL’s legal tampering period begins on March 9. However, the team may still be considering a major addition at the position.
According to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan, Pittsburgh has held internal discussions about Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III and plans to monitor his situation once free agency discussions open early next week.
Walker is widely regarded as the top running back expected to hit the open market after the New York Jets placed the franchise tag on Breece Hall. Because of that, Walker is likely to attract strong interest from several teams — potentially including the Steelers.
Current State of the Steelers’ Running Backs
Pittsburgh already has a capable starter in Jaylen Warren, whose cap hit is a little over $7 million for both the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
In 2025, his first season without Najee Harris in the backfield, the 28-year-old rushed for 958 yards and six touchdowns on 211 carries.
The Steelers will also bring back Kaleb Johnson, though the rookie struggled after being selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Across 10 games, Johnson recorded only 69 rushing yards on 28 attempts and caught one pass for nine yards over 51 offensive snaps.
One reason Pittsburgh could be exploring veteran options is that team MVP Kenneth Gainwell is set to become a free agent. Last season, he totaled 1,023 yards from scrimmage and scored eight touchdowns.
If the Steelers decide not to re-sign Gainwell, they could potentially spend big on Walker and pair him with Warren to form a dangerous backfield tandem.
Should Pittsburgh Pursue Walker?
Walker significantly boosted his reputation with a standout performance in Super Bowl LX, rushing for 135 yards against the New England Patriots.
During the regular season, he ran for 1,027 yards and five touchdowns on 221 carries while also adding 31 receptions for 282 yards.
Spotrac currently projects Walker’s market value at about $9 million per year, though he could earn more given the expected interest from multiple teams.
While Walker could be an exciting replacement if Gainwell departs, the Steelers may be better served using their salary cap space to address other needs on the roster, including cornerback, safety, wide receiver, and quarterback.
