Dave Canales Shares Candid Thoughts on Bryce Young, Identifies Key Area for Growth in 2026
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young showed clear progress in 2025 after a rocky start to his NFL career. He set personal bests in passing production and helped guide the Panthers to their first playoff appearance since 2017.
However, head coach Dave Canales pointed to Young’s command at the line of scrimmage as the most significant improvement. Speaking Thursday on NFL Network, Canales praised Young for taking control of pre-snap responsibilities.
Canales explained that Young elevated his grasp of the offense by processing defensive looks, identifying coverages, and managing protections in both the run and pass game. He noted that Young made major strides early in the season in handling that mental workload and ultimately mastered that aspect of his role.
Statistically, the former No. 1 overall pick in 2023 delivered his best campaign yet, throwing for 3,011 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 63.6% of his passes.
Panthers Expect Another Leap in 2026
Carolina recently picked up the fifth-year option on Young’s rookie deal, making the upcoming season pivotal in determining whether he’ll earn a long-term extension. At the NFL Scouting Combine, Canales confirmed that offensive coordinator Brad Idzik will handle play-calling duties as part of the effort to maximize Young’s development.
Looking ahead, Canales emphasized that consistency is the next step. He said the team plans to continue tailoring the scheme around Young’s strengths while building dependable concepts the quarterback can fully own. Replicating the offense’s most efficient performances on a weekly basis will be critical.
Canales also wants Young to keep influencing games before the snap — making smart checks and adjustments when opportunities arise. The coaching staff intends to give him even more freedom to do so in 2026 as they aim to build on last season’s momentum.
