Notre Dame Targets Elite Versatile Defensive Back in 2027 Class
Notre Dame football is pursuing one of the most versatile defensive backs in the 2027 recruiting cycle, adding another top-tier target to head coach Marcus Freeman’s growing class. The Fighting Irish currently have seven commitments and are entering a busy offseason with numerous official and unofficial visits planned.
One of the standout prospects is Tavares Harrington, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound defensive back from Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel. Harrington offers an impressive mix of size, athleticism, and versatility, drawing interest from programs envisioning him at either cornerback or safety. Notre Dame has kept its options open to monitor his development throughout the rest of his high school career.
Harrington recently trimmed his list to a top ten, which includes Notre Dame, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ole Miss, Florida State, Nebraska, Arkansas, and Kentucky. While Notre Dame has seen some dip in positioning within that group, the offseason presents an opportunity to regain momentum.
Harrington is widely regarded as a top-100 recruit. The 247 Sports Composite ranks him No. 109 overall, No. 13 at cornerback, and No. 7 in Illinois for the 2027 class. He has amassed a long list of offers from elite programs, including Ohio State, Miami, Auburn, Wisconsin, UCLA, and many more. Notre Dame coaches like Mike Mickens and Aaron Henry value Harrington’s versatility and potential to strengthen the secondary.
