NHL trade speculation surrounding Dougie Hamilton created plenty of noise in the days leading up to the trade deadline. As the New Jersey Devils evaluated their roster during the season, talk grew that the veteran defenseman could potentially be moved.
However, the reality behind the scenes was far less dramatic than the rumors suggested. While Hamilton’s name circulated in league discussions and appeared on several trade boards, team management maintained that the Devils never actively attempted to deal him before the deadline.

After the deadline passed, Tom Fitzgerald clarified that the New Jersey Devils never actively shopped Dougie Hamilton. Fitzgerald noted that several teams reached out to the Devils because they believed the veteran defenseman might be available, largely due to the growing trade speculation circulating around the NHL.
The speculation was partly fueled by an earlier moment in the season when Hamilton was a healthy scratch in January. That decision raised questions about his standing with the team and led to the belief that New Jersey might be open to moving the 32-year-old defenseman.
However, Hamilton responded strongly afterward. His offensive production from the blue line improved, and he continued to log significant minutes for the Devils as the season progressed.
Another reason a midseason trade would have been complicated is Hamilton’s contract. The veteran defenseman carries a $9 million annual cap hit that runs through the 2027–28 season. In addition, a sizable signing bonus due in July and trade protection clauses in his deal would make any potential transaction difficult to complete.
Fitzgerald did acknowledge that the Devils could evaluate their roster again during the offseason. New Jersey already has several NHL-caliber defensemen, and the front office may explore adjustments if it decides to strengthen the forward group.
For now, Hamilton remains an important part of the Devils’ defensive core. Despite the wave of NHL trade rumors that generated significant attention, the organization maintains that the speculation did not reflect its actual plans ahead of the trade deadline.
