The Utah Jazz have made a minor adjustment to the end of their roster as the regular season enters its final stretch.

According to Kevin Reynolds of The Salt Lake Tribune, the team has waived veteran center Mo Bamba after the expiration of his second 10-day contract.

Bamba’s stint with Utah ended sooner than expected after he reportedly fell ill, preventing him from traveling with the team for its upcoming road trip and keeping him out of their matchup against the New York Knicks. Because his 10-day deal would expire before the Jazz returned home, the team opted to release him early, freeing up a roster spot and sending Bamba back to free agency.

During his brief time with the Jazz, Bamba appeared in two games and played a limited role. He averaged more than 19 minutes per game, recording 5.0 points and 10.0 rebounds across those appearances. That performance earned him a second 10-day contract as the team evaluated whether he could remain with them for the rest of the season.

Jazz Move On From Bamba, Add Bez Mbeng

The 27-year-old Bamba—selected sixth overall in the 2018 NBA Draft—was originally brought in to provide depth in the frontcourt. Utah had been dealing with several injuries, including absences for Jusuf Nurkic, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Lauri Markkanen, which depleted the team’s size.

Instead of keeping Bamba, the Jazz have chosen another direction. He could return to the team’s G League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars—where he played before joining the NBA roster—or explore opportunities with other teams.

Earlier this season, Bamba also signed a 10-day deal with the Toronto Raptors. Similar to his time in Utah, he played only two games before the contract was not extended.

To fill the open roster spot, Utah has reportedly agreed to a 10-day contract with former Yale University standout Bez Mbeng.

The 22-year-old, 6-foot-4 guard has spent much of the season in the G League with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, an affiliate of the Miami Heat. In 11 games there, Mbeng has averaged 8.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in just over 23 minutes per game.

With Keyonte George expected to miss several weeks due to a hamstring injury, Mbeng could have a chance to earn minutes in the Jazz backcourt as the team looks for depth while one of its top scorers is sidelined.
