Tigers Provide Two Major Injury Updates: One Star Returns, Another Begins Rehab
The Detroit Tigers received some promising injury updates on Tuesday afternoon, signaling reinforcements are on the way.
During an appearance on MLB Radio, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch shared two key updates regarding players who have been sidelined.
First, catcher Jake Rogers, known for his defensive prowess, is coming off the injured list and will be behind the plate for Tarik Skubal’s start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night. Rogers had been an integral part of Skubal’s 2024 Cy Young campaign before his injury.
In addition to Rogers’ return, Hinch also revealed that star center fielder Parker Meadows is beginning his rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo. Meadows, who has been sidelined since spring training due to a nerve issue in his throwing arm, was placed on the 60-day IL, leading to uncertainty about his potential return in 2025.
However, the 25-year-old appears to be progressing well in his recovery, marking a significant milestone in his journey back to the field. Although he won’t be eligible to rejoin the Tigers until the end of the month, and it could take even longer due to the rehab process, Meadows is now closer to returning than many had anticipated.
With Rogers back, it’s likely that Tomas Nido, who has done a solid job as the backup catcher, will be designated for assignment. Dillon Dingler, who has also been performing well, may continue to take on a larger role. Detroit would likely prefer to keep Nido in Toledo if possible.
The Tigers’ outfield is about to get a boost with both Meadows and utility player Matt Vierling on the verge of rejoining the team. For Hinch, this influx of talent will offer plenty of flexibility in terms of lineup and defensive options, giving Detroit a better chance to put together the most competitive matchups moving forward.
