NBA Trade Rumors: Dallas Mavericks Have Shown Interest in Veteran Shooting Guard

The Mavericks need more shooters and have talked with a recent trade partner about the availability of one of their depth pieces

The Dallas Mavericks aim to enhance their team this summer following a defeat to the Boston Celtics in five games during the NBA Finals. Despite having top-tier talent in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the team requires improved support from its players.

One avenue they are exploring for improvement involves acquiring more proficient 3-point shooters. Their deficient perimeter shooting was a significant factor in their loss to the Celtics, allowing Boston to allocate more defensive attention to Doncic and Irving.

According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Dallas Mavericks have shown “exploratory interest” in veteran shooting guard Landry Shamet, who is currently playing for the Washington Wizards.

Shamet was traded to the Wizards from the Phoenix Suns as part of the Chris Paul and Jordan Poole three-team trade last summer. He averaged 7.1 points per game while shooting a career-low 33.8% from 3-point range. His subpar shooting performance may have been impacted by the lack of playmaking on the Wizards’ roster, so a change to a team like the Mavericks, with better spacing and the opportunity to receive passes from Doncic and Irving, could lead to a rebound year for him. Shamet has a career 38.4% shooting average from beyond the arc.

The Mavericks are currently aiming to trade Tim Hardaway Jr., who is entering the final year of his contract and set to earn over $16million.Shamet,ontheotherhand,hastwoyearsand$22.75 million remaining on his contract, with a team option for the second year. Any potential trade scenario involving these two teams may involve sending Hardaway to Washington along with a swap of second-round picks. Dallas had previous dealings with Washington at the trade deadline, acquiring Daniel Gafford but falling short of completing a trade for Kyle Kuzma.

One concern regarding Shamet is his availability, as he has not played in more than 70 games since his rookie season. Over the last two seasons combined, he has appeared in only 86 total games. Despite this, Shamet has been a part of successful teams, including the 2022 Suns, the 2020 Clippers, and the 2021 Nets, all of which achieved significant accomplishments in their respective seasons.
