Why Washington Added Trey Cooley Through the Transfer Portal
Just weeks before spring practice, the Washington Huskies made a late addition at running back by bringing in Trey Cooley from the transfer portal.
The 5-foot-10, 208-pound back arrives from Troy after previous stops at Louisville and Georgia Tech. Over his college career, Cooley has totaled 1,009 rushing yards and six touchdowns, along with 33 receptions for 355 yards and four more scores. However, injuries have limited him recently, as a head injury cut short his senior season at Georgia Tech and a knee issue sidelined him for all of 2025.
Earlier in the offseason, Washington added Jayden Limar from Oregon and initially appeared set with him as the veteran leader of a young running back group that includes Jordan Washington, Quaid Carr, and Brian Bonner. But after reevaluating the position, head coach Jedd Fisch and running backs coach Scottie Graham decided another experienced presence was necessary.
Fisch explained that while Limar brought experience, he was still new to the system, leaving a largely inexperienced group behind him. Adding Cooley, a Georgia Tech graduate with game experience, provides another steady voice and mentor in the room. Fisch compared the move to a previous situation at Arizona, where bringing in a veteran back from Auburn helped stabilize the group and ultimately paid off.
For now, Cooley’s impact will come off the field. He is still recovering from his knee injury, while Limar is rehabbing from ankle surgery, leaving both unavailable for spring practice. Still, the expectation is that both players will be ready to return by fall camp, giving Washington a deeper and more experienced backfield heading into the season.
