Victor Wembanyama’s MVP hopes in doubt after injury exit
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama may see his MVP-caliber season derailed after leaving Monday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers with a left rib contusion.
The injury forced him out before halftime, adding to a growing list of health concerns. His night took a turn in the second quarter when he briefly exited with an arm issue following a collision, only to return and then suffer another blow—this time to the ribs after contact with Paul George. Wembanyama showed visible discomfort and did not come back after checking out late in the half.
Before exiting, the 7-foot-4 standout had already recorded 17 points, five rebounds, and three blocks in just 16 minutes, continuing to make his presence felt on both ends of the floor. Still, the focus now shifts to his health moving forward.
This latest setback compounds existing concerns, as Wembanyama had already been managing an ankle issue that recently sidelined him. With just three regular-season games remaining, the San Antonio Spurs must now weigh the risks of bringing him back versus prioritizing his long-term health.
At 59–19, San Antonio is firmly positioned near the top of the Western Conference with home-court advantage secured, but the bigger question now revolves around Wembanyama’s award eligibility. Under the NBA’s 65-game rule, he needs to appear in at least one more game to remain eligible for honors like MVP and Defensive Player of the Year. If he’s unable to return, his name could be removed from consideration despite his dominant season.
Prior to the injury, Wembanyama had built a strong MVP case, averaging 24.7 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, and three assists per game while leading the Spurs back into playoff contention. He had even climbed to the top of the MVP ladder and emerged as the frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year.
Now, with the season winding down, his availability for even one of the remaining games could determine whether his historic campaign receives the recognition it appeared destined for.
