Florida Gators Secure Elite In-State QB Recruit Over SEC Rivals
The Florida Gators have continued their recruiting surge, picking up two major commitments in as many days.
On Thursday, Florida landed one of its top targets in the 2027 class when four-star quarterback Davin Davidson from Sarasota’s Cardinal Mooney High School announced his commitment, choosing the Gators over Georgia, Kentucky, and Auburn. Recruiting analysts had widely projected Florida as his destination leading up to the decision.
Davidson has been one of the fastest-rising prospects in the class. Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 215 pounds, he boasts one of the strongest arms in the country. After being ranked as low as No. 71 among quarterbacks earlier this year, he has climbed to No. 154 overall nationally and No. 13 at his position following impressive offseason camp performances, including earning “Alpha Dog” honors at Elite 11 Miami. He is also currently ranked as Florida’s top quarterback by Rivals.
In his first full season as a starter, Davidson threw for 2,497 yards and 24 touchdowns, leading Cardinal Mooney to a 14-1 record and a state championship. His physical tools and upside align closely with what Florida’s new coaching staff is seeking at the position.
Quarterbacks coach Joe Craddock has emphasized the importance of accuracy, pocket presence, toughness, and a deep passion for the game when evaluating recruits. He noted that players who truly love football and demonstrate resilience are the ones most likely to succeed and develop within the program.
Although Davidson is still considered a developmental prospect with limited starting experience, Florida made him a clear priority as his recruitment gained momentum. The timing of his development fits well with the program’s long-term quarterback plans, as the staff looks to build continuity and develop talent internally.
Head coach Jon Sumrall has made in-state recruiting a central focus since arriving in Gainesville, and Davidson’s commitment reflects that strategy. He has stressed the importance of building a strong foundation with elite high school talent from Florida, calling it essential to long-term success.
Davidson becomes the fifth commitment in Florida’s 2027 class, joining a group that is quickly climbing into the national top 10. His pledge follows closely behind five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller’s commitment, adding to the growing momentum as the Gators continue to pursue other top prospects.
