Gonzaga Welcomes 7’1″ Transfer Target Massamba Diop for Key Visit
Gonzaga is set to host 7’1″ center Massamba Diop, one of the most coveted players in the transfer portal, giving him a chance to see Mark Few’s track record in developing talent while the Bulldogs assess his fit for their roster.
The Zags, who have already added transfer Isiah Harwell, are looking to strengthen their frontcourt further with Diop, a standout freshman at Arizona State. Last season, the Senegalese big man averaged 13.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, and 1.1 assists in nearly 30 minutes per game, shooting 59.4% on two-pointers and 71.5% from the free-throw line. He also showed glimpses of range from beyond the arc. Notably, he scored 11 points with four rebounds and two blocks against Gonzaga in his third collegiate game, though the Zags won 77-65.
Why Diop Aligns with Gonzaga’s Frontcourt
Diop’s 7’1″, 230-pound frame and soft scoring touch make him an ideal fit for the high-usage center role that Few consistently employs. Paired with Braden Huff, who thrives as an interior scorer, Diop would be able to focus on rebounding and defense, areas where he excels. His 69 blocks as a freshman would rank fourth in Gonzaga history if replicated, underscoring his rim-protection ability.
Beyond defense, Diop brings offensive versatility. He can step out for threes, draw fouls effectively, and adapt to multiple roles on both ends of the floor, reflecting the adaptability Few values in his bigs.
Development, International Pipeline, and NBA Potential
Diop’s breakout season positions him as a player with significant upside. Gonzaga has a storied record of developing big men into NBA talent, including Zach Collins, Brandon Clarke, Chet Holmgren, Kelly Olynyk, Domantas Sabonis, and Drew Timme. With scoring options like Huff, Davis Fogle, and Mario Saint-Supery already on the roster, Diop can focus on defense and rebounding while benefiting from open looks created by his teammates. His efficiency inside could help bolster his NBA prospects.
Gonzaga’s reputation for developing international big men—from Przemek Karnowski to Filip Petrusev to Killian Tillie—makes it a natural landing spot for Diop. He also shares a connection with the program through former teammate Ismaila Diagne, who played with him on Real Madrid’s U18 team. Diagne, now entering the transfer portal himself, could advocate for Diop to join Gonzaga for the 2026-27 season.
