Auburn Bolsters Frontcourt with Sun Belt Standout Thomas Dowd
Auburn has added another key piece through the transfer portal, securing a commitment from former Troy forward Thomas Dowd, who announced his decision Monday. The move marks the Tigers’ third addition of the current transfer cycle, with Dowd set to spend his final season of eligibility on the Plains.
Dowd, a 6-foot-8 forward from Dothan, Alabama, is coming off an impressive year in which he averaged 14.4 points and a conference-best 10.1 rebounds per game. He earned Sun Belt Tournament MVP honors along with First Team All-Conference recognition, helping establish himself as one of the league’s top performers.
From Under-the-Radar to Impact Transfer
Coming out of high school in 2023, Dowd was largely overlooked and unranked, but his production at Troy has elevated him into a four-star transfer prospect. His ability to average a double-double last season stands out even more considering no Auburn player averaged more than 7.1 rebounds, highlighting an immediate area of need he can address.
Auburn Reloads in the Paint
Dowd becomes the fourth frontcourt addition for Auburn this offseason. The Tigers previously signed French big man Narcisse Ngoy, added 7-foot-1 center Bukky Oboye from Santa Clara, and picked up Creighton forward Owen Freeman—all within a busy stretch of roster rebuilding.
After struggling with depth in the frontcourt last season, Auburn now finds itself with an abundance of size and interior options heading into 2027.
Roster Shake-Up and Outlook
The influx of big men has already led to changes, as Sebastian Williams-Adams opted to enter the transfer portal shortly after Dowd’s commitment, seemingly due to increased competition for playing time.
The Tigers’ frontcourt group now consists of their four new additions along with Emeka Oporum, who missed much of last season due to injury. Combined with returning contributors like NIT Most Outstanding Player Kevin Overton and rising sophomore Tahaad Pettiford, Auburn appears positioned for a stronger postseason push.
However, with so many new faces, building chemistry will be crucial. Head coach Steven Pearl faces the challenge of blending this revamped roster into a cohesive unit as Auburn looks to contend for a deep tournament run—and potentially a return to the Final Four.
