Notre Dame secures a commitment from a four-star safety over offers from Miami, Ohio State and Florida in a major 2027 recruiting class win.
University of Notre Dame secured one of the top recruiting victories of the spring on Saturday, landing four-star safety Zayden Gamble from St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Gamble announced his commitment on April 25, picking the Fighting Irish over fellow finalists University of Miami, University of Florida, and Ohio State University.
A single visit to South Bend proved decisive. After making the trip on March 21, Gamble quickly realized Notre Dame was the right fit. He told Rivals that the visit stood out above the rest and made his decision clear.
His commitment message reflected that certainty: “All Glory to God, Notre Dame Nation… I’m home!!!” The timing added another layer of intrigue, as Gamble had official visits scheduled with each finalist this summer but chose to cancel them and commit early—an indication of how firm his decision had become.
At 6-foot, 190 pounds, Gamble turned in an impressive 2025 campaign at St. Thomas Aquinas, recording 65 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, and three interceptions after totaling four picks the previous season.
Evaluators view him as a seasoned split safety with strong instincts and a leadership mindset. He’s known for diagnosing plays quickly, taking efficient angles, and contributing effectively in both zone coverage and run support.
Gamble comes from a strong football lineage. His father, David, signed as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1994 and later earned a ring as part of the Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl-winning team in 1998. That pedigree shows. He was also selected to compete in the Under Armour All-America Game in 2026 as a junior, further cementing his national reputation.
“The opportunities at University of Notre Dame are unmatched,” Gamble told Chad Simmons of Rivals. “That’s the defense I want to be part of. I want to play for Coach Marcus Freeman and be in that brotherhood.” He also indicated he plans to shut down his recruitment completely, though he still has an official visit scheduled for June 19 in South Bend.
As for the programs that missed out—University of Miami, Ohio State University, and University of Florida—the impact varies. Miami, in particular, had invested heavily, hosting Gamble on at least 10 visits and previously appearing to be the favorite before Notre Dame surged following his March trip.
The Hurricanes currently hold eight commitments in their 2027 class, with just one defensive back—safety Jaylyn Jones from McArthur High School in Florida. That leaves secondary depth as a clear priority moving forward. Head coach Mario Cristobal is still targeting elite South Florida prospects like five-star offensive lineman Mark Matthews and five-star wide receiver Nick Lennear, but losing Gamble highlights a noticeable need in the defensive backfield.
Ohio State University entered Saturday with just two defensive backs committed in its 2027 class, and the Buckeyes had made it clear Zayden Gamble would have a spot if he chose them. Now, they’ll shift focus elsewhere. One option is four-star safety Isala Aisa Wily-Ava from St. John Bosco High School, who has Ohio State among his top eight schools. Head coach Ryan Day and his staff are also preparing for an active June on the recruiting trail.
For University of Notre Dame, the impact goes beyond a single addition. With Gamble in the fold, the 247Sports class calculator projects the Irish to rise to No. 6 nationally, totaling 190.22 points. He also becomes Notre Dame’s first signee from St. Thomas Aquinas High School since linebacker Drew White in the 2017 class. His commitment could also help build momentum in recruiting his teammate, four-star wide receiver Julius Jones Jr..
