Manny Machado Exits Padres Game vs. Cubs in Worrying Twist
San Diego Padres star third baseman Manny Machado was removed from Monday night’s matchup against the Chicago Cubs after grounding out in the sixth inning, raising immediate concern.
The reason for his early exit was not immediately disclosed, but given the close score and significant time remaining, it strongly suggests a possible injury or physical discomfort.
Gavin Sheets replaced him at first base, while Ty France shifted over to third to fill in defensively.
Before leaving the game, Machado was having a strong offensive performance, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. His recent form has been trending upward, including a two-homer game in Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He also reached a milestone earlier in the night, recording the 400th double of his MLB career, along with a highlight defensive play.
Overall this season, Machado is batting .232 with a .742 OPS, and he has now recorded hits in five consecutive games, with multiple hits in three of them. After his recent success in Mexico City, he had expressed hope that it could signal a turning point in his season.
The potential loss of Machado, even for a short period, would be a major problem for San Diego. The Padres lack a true everyday replacement at third base. While Ty France can cover the position, he is primarily a first baseman and a Gold Glove winner at that spot. Miguel Andújar is another option, but he is considered a below-average defender at third.
If Machado were to miss extended time, the Padres could turn to Sung-Mun Song, who signed a four-year deal this offseason but has had limited opportunity due to injury and roster competition. He recently made his MLB debut as a pinch-runner during the Mexico City Series before being sent back to Triple-A.
