Houston Secures Commitment from Tyus Thomas
Houston has added a promising four-star point guard, Tyus Thomas, who already has ties to the program.
Thomas, the younger brother of Dedan Thomas Jr.—who recently joined Houston after LSU—will now form a sibling duo on the Cougars’ roster. This pairing offers a unique chance for the team’s young talent to develop and shine together.
A top prospect from Nevada, Thomas was ranked as the No. 1 point guard in the state during his high school career. Announcing his decision on Instagram, he said, “After everything I’ve been through, I learned it only takes one big win to cancel all the losses. Next season, I’m proud to say I’m attending the University of Houston, joining the program as a redshirt freshman.”
High School Career
Thomas starred at Liberty High School in Henderson, Nevada, where he earned Class 5A co-MVP honors as a senior, averaging 14.9 points and 3.9 assists while leading Liberty to a 5A state runner-up finish. He is listed at 6 feet tall and 175 pounds. Despite interest from LSU, Creighton, and UNLV, Thomas chose Houston for the chance to develop under head coach Kelvin Sampson.
Fit with the Cougars
Joining his brother will give Thomas an immediate mentor on the team, and he’ll also benefit from experienced players like Joseph Tugler, Kordel Jefferson, Mercy Miller, Chase McCarthy, and Bryce Jackson.
Thomas brings strong mid-range shooting, elite defensive skills, and the ability to perform in clutch moments. Known for his excellent ball-handling, court vision, and game management, he has the potential to become a breakout star in Houston’s program.
