Reports: Former Gophers Top-Star Ranked Among Top-25 Young NFL Players

PFF rated Winfield as the NFL’s top safety last season.

Michigan hosted several recruits from the 2025 class for official visits last weekend, signaling the end of official visit season. Among the visitors were a top-50 Notre Dame commit, a highly-ranked wide receiver, and a top-300 linebacker.

One notable visitor was Ivan Taylor, a top-50 safety committed to Notre Dame since December. Despite his commitment, Taylor visited Michigan, Alabama, and Florida in June. He praised Michigan’s coaching staff, particularly Coach Moore, and mentioned his parents were also impressed. Michigan continues to pursue Taylor, hoping to sway his commitment.

Four-star wide receiver Taz Williams also visited Michigan for the third time. He emphasized the strong relationships he has with the coaching staff, which keep Michigan high on his list. Williams is set to announce his decision on July 13, with Michigan, Penn State, SMU, and Texas A&M in contention. His recent visit boosted Michigan’s chances.

Four-star linebacker Kamar Archie visited Michigan, discussing his potential role in the defense with Coach Jean-Mary. He appreciated the bond among the players and the welcoming atmosphere. While Michigan is not currently the favorite, the visit made a positive impact on Archie.

Other updates include defensive lineman Maxwell Roy narrowing his choices to Michigan, Ohio State, and Rutgers, with Ohio State currently favored. Defensive line commit Bobby Kanka reaffirmed his commitment to Michigan, and four-star linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng listed Michigan in his top five schools.

Former Minnesota Gophers star Antoine Winfield Jr. has quickly become one of the NFL’s top defensive backs. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin ranked him as the 16th-best player under 25 in the NFL. Winfield, who signed a four-year, $84.1 million extension this offseason, was rated the top safety by Pro Football Focus last season and has been a top-10 safety for the past three seasons. Benjamin highlighted Winfield’s significant contributions to the Buccaneers’ defense, noting his standout performance in 2023 that helped propel the team to another playoff run. Winfield’s impressive college career included 177 tackles, 9 interceptions, and 3 touchdowns.
