Allen Graves Could Be an Intriguing Addition for the Oklahoma City Thunder
With the NBA Draft approaching, teams are narrowing their focus to prospects who fit their roster needs and draft position. For the Oklahoma City Thunder, draft preparations began earlier than anticipated after their season ended in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals with a home loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
One prospect who has recently drawn Oklahoma City’s attention is Santa Clara forward Allen Graves. The Thunder reportedly hosted Graves for a pre-draft visit, and he could emerge as a valuable piece for an already championship-caliber roster. Oklahoma City has previously found success with former Santa Clara players, most notably All-NBA forward Jalen Williams, and Graves could become the next Bronco to join the organization.
Graves’ game is highlighted by his intelligence and efficiency. He consistently makes smart decisions, limits turnovers, and uses his size effectively on both ends of the floor. Those qualities align closely with the traits Oklahoma City has prioritized in recent drafts.
Standing 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot wingspan, Graves possesses the versatility to contribute across multiple positions. He excels around the basket, finishes efficiently, and has a knack for creating extra possessions through offensive rebounding and hustle plays.
Versatile players who can impact the game in several ways are increasingly valuable in today’s NBA. Speaking on the Old Man and the Three podcast, Graves described his approach to the game: “Knock down a shot, go get an offensive rebound, get extra possessions. Win the possession battles on both ends, whether that’s getting deflections, steals, blocks, or making the hustle plays.”
While Graves brings many strengths, some scouts have questioned his athletic upside and whether his game will translate seamlessly to the NBA level. His defensive consistency will likely need improvement to meet Oklahoma City’s demanding standards. However, the Thunder have demonstrated an ability to develop players with similar profiles and maximize their strengths.
Recent examples show the organization’s commitment to defensive growth, helping players carve out meaningful roles despite physical limitations. Graves’ willingness to embrace less glamorous responsibilities could make him an especially strong fit.
“I want to make the dirty play,” Graves said. “I want to be that key guy, that glue guy, the connector piece on offense.”
With two first-round selections in the upcoming NBA Draft on June 23, the Thunder have several options available. Whether Graves is ultimately one of those choices remains uncertain, but his skill set and mindset appear to align well with Oklahoma City’s team-building philosophy.
