The St. Louis Cardinals announced a series of roster moves Friday, highlighted by the promotion of rookie corner infielder Blaze Jordan from Triple-A Memphis. The club also recalled right-handed pitcher Chris Roycroft from Memphis. To make room on the roster, infielder Nolan Gorman and right-hander Hunter Dobbins were optioned to Triple-A following Thursday’s game. Additionally, infielder Ramón Urías was transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list due to a right elbow injury.
The Cardinals will carry those changes into Saturday’s matchup against the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. as St. Louis looks to even the series after Minnesota claimed the opener and holds a 1-0 advantage.
Breaking Down the Roster
Jordan, 23, has impressed at Triple-A this season after being acquired from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Steven Matz at last year’s trade deadline. In 57 games with Memphis, he posted a .313 batting average with a .373 on-base percentage, a .548 slugging percentage, 11 home runs, and 35 RBIs.
The Southaven, Mississippi native has been one of the most productive hitters in Triple-A. He entered the weekend tied for the league lead with 19 doubles while ranking among the top players in total bases and hits. His .313 average also placed him among the leaders in the International League. Jordan’s strong start earned him Cardinals Minor League Co-Player of the Month honors for April alongside Palm Beach infielder Jack Gurevitch.
Since beginning his professional career in 2021, Jordan has compiled a .286 batting average with 73 home runs and 375 RBIs across 545 games. He was originally selected by Boston in the third round of the 2020 MLB Draft out of DeSoto Central High School.
Defensively, Jordan has spent most of his career at third base and first base. He has appeared in 262 games at third and 228 at first, including time at both positions this season with Memphis.
Jordan is expected to wear No. 33 and would become the fifth Cardinals player to make his major league debut this season, joining JJ Wetherholt, Matt Pushard, Bryan Torres, and Brycen Mautz. The most recent Cardinals player to debut in Minneapolis was Chris Richard on July 17, 2000, when he famously homered on the first pitch he saw in the majors at the Metrodome.
If Jordan reaches the field, he would join a very small group of major leaguers with the first name Blaze, a list that currently includes only Blaze Alexander.
