Ohio State will once again be tasked with replacing several key contributors from its championship-caliber roster, including standout safety Caleb Downs. A first-round NFL Draft selection, Downs served as one of the leaders of the Buckeyes’ defense and leaves behind big shoes to fill in the secondary.
However, there is optimism that Florida State transfer Earl Little Jr. can help ease that transition. Analysts have identified Little as one of Ohio State’s most impactful offseason additions, citing his versatility and experience as reasons he could emerge as a major contributor in 2026.
Little developed into a valuable defensive weapon during his time with the Seminoles, lining up at multiple positions throughout the secondary. Last season, he saw significant snaps at free safety, box safety, and slot cornerback, showcasing the flexibility that could make him an ideal fit for Ohio State’s defense. His ability to move around the field may allow the Buckeyes to replicate some of the versatility they previously enjoyed with Downs.
Ohio State was more active in the transfer portal than usual this offseason, bringing in a large group of newcomers expected to play meaningful roles immediately. With several defensive starters departing for the NFL, players like Little will be counted on to help maintain the high standard established by the Buckeyes in recent years.
As has often been the case under Ryan Day, Ohio State appears confident in its ability to reload rather than rebuild. Little is expected to be one of the key names to watch as the Buckeyes prepare for another season with championship aspirations.
