Phillies May Get Another Opportunity to Pursue Bo Bichette in Free Agency
The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to prioritize offensive upgrades as they approach the MLB trade deadline, but a potential infield addition could become a major offseason storyline.
Philadelphia’s recent series against the Milwaukee Brewers highlighted the club’s offensive inconsistencies. Despite earning a high-scoring 9-8 victory in one game, the Phillies were shut out twice, underscoring the lineup’s ongoing struggles. While strong pitching has helped keep the team competitive, improvements at the plate remain a clear need.
Although the Phillies are likely to focus on adding outfield help before the trade deadline, attention could shift toward the infield during the offseason. One player who may re-emerge as a target is Bo Bichette.
A Potential Second Chance for Philadelphia
The Phillies appeared close to signing Bichette during free agency last winter. However, the deal ultimately fell through when the New York Mets stepped in and signed the infielder to a three-year, $126 million contract.
Bichette’s agreement includes opt-out clauses after each season, and there is growing speculation that he could test free agency again this winter. According to reports around the league, several teams—including Philadelphia—could have another opportunity to pursue him if he chooses to leave New York.
Financially, Bichette received a substantial signing bonus and still has significant money remaining on his contract. Because of that, opting out is far from guaranteed, particularly considering his uneven performance during the early part of the season.
Bichette’s Recent Resurgence
After a difficult start to the 2026 campaign, Bichette has begun to regain his form. His strong production in June has resembled the offensive player the Mets expected when they signed him. Over a recent stretch, he has posted impressive numbers, contributing extra-base hits and power while helping improve his overall offensive profile.
Earlier in the season, Philadelphia may have felt fortunate after missing out on Bichette given his struggles. However, with several Phillies infielders failing to produce consistently at the plate, changes to the roster could be on the horizon once the season ends.
If Bichette continues his resurgence and ultimately returns to free agency, the Phillies could once again view him as an attractive option to strengthen their infield and add more offensive firepower to the lineup.
