LSU secured a significant recruiting victory on Wednesday, landing a commitment from Trey Martin, the top-ranked running back in Louisiana’s 2027 recruiting class. The Franklin Parish High School standout chose the Tigers after a highly competitive recruiting battle among several SEC programs.
Martin delivered an outstanding season for the Patriots, rushing for 1,310 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding 17 receptions for 277 yards and five more scores through the air.
Franklin Parish head coach Adrian Burnette praised Martin’s dynamic skill set, calling him one of the most explosive players he has ever coached. Burnette highlighted Martin’s ability not only as a runner but also as a playmaker in the passing game, noting his talent for creating big gains after making catches in open space.
The 5-foot-10, 202-pound prospect attracted attention from several top programs, including Alabama and Florida. As a junior, he also showcased impressive speed by posting an 11.31-second time in the 100-meter dash.
Martin developed a close connection with LSU head coach Lane Kiffin and running backs coach Kevin Smith during their time at Ole Miss, and those relationships continued to strengthen after both coaches moved to LSU.
According to Burnette, Martin approached the recruiting process with a professional mindset. He carefully evaluated his options, handled the attention from multiple schools with maturity, and ultimately chose the program he believed was the best fit for his future.
Martin becomes LSU’s third running back pledge in the 2027 recruiting class, joining four-star prospect Trey Segarra of South Carolina and three-star recruit Brennan Lacy.
LSU also received another major commitment on Wednesday from four-star edge rusher Chris Whitehead of Chesterfield, Virginia. Whitehead, who recorded 54 tackles and 10.5 sacks as a junior, selected the Tigers over other notable suitors such as Ohio State, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech.
Just a few weeks ago, LSU’s 2027 class included only four commitments and ranked outside the top 50 nationally. Since then, the Tigers have surged to 13 commitments, climbing to No. 19 in the 247Sports team rankings with additional targets still in play.
Among LSU’s top remaining priorities are five-star offensive lineman Caden Moss from Mississippi and five-star wide receiver Xavier Sabb from New Jersey.
The Tigers are also making a strong push to flip Easton Royal, a standout receiver from Brother Martin who is currently committed to Texas.
In addition, LSU recently hosted Texas Tech pledge Jalen Brewster, widely regarded as the top overall prospect in the 2027 class. The elite defensive lineman also visited Florida this past weekend as his recruitment continues to attract national attention.
