Mock NBA Trade Proposal: Rockets Acquire Veteran Center from the East
The Houston Rockets have quietly built enough flexibility to pursue meaningful roster upgrades this offseason. With veteran star Kevin Durant now leading the team, Houston is expected to look for improvements across the roster, particularly at point guard and center.
While Alperen Sengun has established himself as an All-Star-caliber player, the Rockets could still benefit from additional frontcourt depth. Sengun often split time between power forward and center alongside Steven Adams, and the team’s backup options have not provided consistent production.
One potential target is Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Brooklyn is willing to discuss veteran players in trade talks if the return is strong enough. Claxton, who posted averages of 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game, could be an appealing fit for Houston.
After spending his entire NBA career with the Nets, the 27-year-old rim protector may be ready for a fresh start. His athleticism, rebounding, and defensive presence would complement Sengun well in Houston’s frontcourt.

Brooklyn receives:
- Clint Capela
- Dorian Finney-Smith
- Return of the 2027 first-round pick swap
- 2028 first-round pick (top-eight protected)
Although the package appears substantial, Houston would essentially be wagering on Claxton’s long-term value.
Capela’s stint with the Rockets has not lived up to expectations, as he struggled to make a consistent impact. Claxton would provide a younger and more versatile option in the paint.
Moving Finney-Smith’s contract could also be beneficial for Houston, particularly if Brooklyn is willing to absorb the salary. Additionally, returning Brooklyn’s 2027 pick-swap rights may not be as costly as it sounds, especially given the uncertainty surrounding future draft positioning under the NBA’s lottery system.
The protected 2028 first-round pick offers Brooklyn additional future assets while limiting Houston’s downside risk.
In the end, the deal would give the Nets valuable draft compensation and financial flexibility, while the Rockets gain a proven defensive center who could strengthen their roster without significantly compromising their future.
