Obinna Ekezie Jr. Chooses Louisville, Reclassifies to 2026 Class
Louisville secured a major recruiting victory with the commitment of five-star center Obinna Ekezie Jr., who also announced that he will reclassify into the 2026 recruiting class. The 7-foot, 220-pound standout from Southeastern Prep selected the Cardinals over several high-profile programs, including Arkansas, BYU, Kentucky, and Maryland, giving head coach Pat Kelsey the highest-rated recruit in Louisville basketball history.
Ekezie arrives with significant potential and strong basketball roots, as his father, former NBA player Obinna Ekezie, enjoyed a professional career at the highest level.
One of Ekezie’s biggest strengths is his offensive upside. He excels as an athletic finisher around the rim, making him a major threat in pick-and-roll situations and as a lob target. Although most of his scoring currently comes in the paint, he has shown encouraging touch and the tools to expand his offensive game, including the ability to face up and attack from outside the post.
Louisville plans to take a patient approach to his development. Kelsey is expected to implement a long-term growth plan that allows Ekezie to gain experience at both power forward and center. This versatility could enable him to share the floor effectively with Kansas transfer Flory Bidunga while continuing to refine his all-around game at the collegiate level.
