Angels Slugger Emerges as Strong Trade Target for Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to be active before the MLB trade deadline, and adding a right-handed hitting outfielder remains one of their top priorities.
After climbing from 10 games below .500 in April to 10 games above the mark by the end of June, Philadelphia has put itself firmly in the postseason race. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is now expected to look for upgrades that can strengthen the roster for the second half.
The outfield has become a particular area of concern following season-ending injuries to Adolis García and Johan Rojas. While the Phillies added Derek Hill from the Chicago White Sox to bolster their depth, they are still in need of another right-handed bat capable of contributing in right field.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Jo Adell is an ideal trade fit for Philadelphia.
Jo Adell Could Fill an Important Need
Adell would bring much-needed power to the Phillies’ lineup. He has hit 57 home runs over the past two seasons and is on pace to eclipse the 20-homer mark for the third consecutive year.
Known for his elite bat speed, Adell ranks among the league leaders with a 77.2 mph average swing speed. His expected batting average, expected slugging percentage, average exit velocity, and hard-hit rate all suggest there is still untapped offensive upside.
Surrounded by a deeper lineup in Philadelphia, Adell could become an even more productive hitter, particularly in the lower half of the batting order.
A Solution Against Left-Handed Pitching
One of the Phillies’ biggest offensive issues this season has been producing against left-handed pitching, especially when relying on right-handed hitters in favorable platoon matchups. That’s where Adell could make an immediate impact.
In 107 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers this season, Adell owns a .286/.327/.490 slash line with six home runs and 18 RBIs. Throughout his career, he has posted a .481 slugging percentage against southpaws, making him a legitimate weapon in those situations.
Adding Adell alongside Derek Hill would give Philadelphia more flexibility and improve its offensive production against left-handed starters.
A Logical Trade Fit
While Adell may not profile as an everyday star and still has defensive limitations, his power and success against left-handed pitching make him an attractive platoon option. Pairing him with a left-handed hitting outfielder would allow the Phillies to maximize his strengths while addressing one of the roster’s most glaring weaknesses as they prepare for the stretch run.
