Trade Proposal Gives Jets Experienced Backup Behind Geno Smith

Although Geno Smith is firmly expected to open the season as the New York Jets’ starting quarterback, the team could still look to add another veteran to solidify its depth chart.

The Jets currently have Cade Klubnik and Bailey Zappe competing for the backup role, but questions remain about whether either is the ideal insurance policy if Smith were to miss time. As a result, some believe New York could benefit from adding a more experienced option before the regular season begins.

One recent trade proposal suggests the Jets pursue Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell, who has starting experience and could provide stability behind Smith.

O’Connell Emerges as a Potential Trade Target

The proposed move centers on O’Connell, who has spent the past three seasons with the Raiders. While Smith has the starting job locked up, the backup competition remains unsettled entering training camp, with Klubnik and Zappe battling for the No. 2 role.

O’Connell offers considerably more NFL experience. Over 17 career starts, he has completed 62% of his passes for 3,932 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Despite compiling a 7-10 record as a starter, the Raiders appear to have moved in a different direction after adding Kirk Cousins and selecting quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Those moves have fueled speculation that O’Connell could be available via trade.

Would He Be the Right Fit?

At 27 years old, O’Connell would give the Jets an experienced backup capable of stepping into the lineup if needed. While he may not project as a long-term starter, his familiarity with NFL offenses and game experience could provide valuable depth behind Smith.

Whether New York ultimately pursues another quarterback will likely depend on how confident the coaching staff is in Klubnik and Zappe. If the Jets believe they need a more proven backup to protect against a potential injury to Smith, O’Connell could be a logical trade candidate as the season approaches.
