Mock Trade Suggests Patriots Could Add Valuable Veteran Safety

As NFL training camps approach, trade speculation is beginning to heat up, with analysts proposing moves that could strengthen rosters before the regular season. One such proposal from Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton has the New England Patriots making a deal to improve their depth at safety by acquiring a veteran defensive back from the Houston Texans.

Although New England appears well-equipped at the position after signing former Chicago Bears standout Kevin Byard in free agency, adding another experienced safety could further solidify the secondary. The Patriots also have Craig Woodson, who is expected to compete for a significant role after showing promise during his rookie campaign. Even so, quality depth remains an important asset for any NFL defense.

Moton believes the Patriots could benefit from bringing in veteran safety Jimmie Stewart, who would provide competition for playing time alongside Byard. The suggestion comes after New England lost Jaylinn Hawkins to the Baltimore Ravens in free agency, leaving room for another dependable option in the defensive backfield. Stewart’s experience and versatility could make him a valuable addition without requiring the Patriots to give up significant draft capital.

Before suffering a quadriceps injury that ended his season in Week 10, Stewart had been enjoying a productive campaign. Over nine games, he totaled 25 tackles, defended two passes, forced a fumble, and started four contests. His biggest strength was defending the run, earning an impressive 79.5 run-defense grade from Pro Football Focus. Many of his tackles came while stopping running plays or making open-field stops, highlighting his effectiveness near the line of scrimmage.

Coverage, however, has been the weaker part of Stewart’s game. He received a 42.4 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus and allowed opposing quarterbacks to post a passer rating of 102.1 when targeting him. While those numbers indicate room for improvement in pass defense, his physical style and run-stopping ability could still make him an important contributor in the right role.

The Patriots already boast one of the league’s stronger run defenses. Last season, they surrendered only 101.7 rushing yards per game while limiting opponents to 4.2 yards per carry. The unit also accomplished a remarkable feat by becoming the first team since 1950 to prevent every opposing running back from reaching 50 rushing yards during the first eight weeks of the season.

New England’s run defense did experience a decline later in the year, particularly between Weeks 9 and 16. That stretch coincided with defensive tackle Milton Williams missing time because of a high ankle sprain, demonstrating how important depth is across the defensive front and secondary.

Acquiring Stewart would not necessarily fill an urgent need, but it would provide valuable insurance behind the 34-year-old Byard while adding another experienced defender to an already talented unit. Because the Texans are unlikely to demand a substantial return, the proposed deal represents a low-risk move with the potential for meaningful rewards. If the opportunity becomes available, adding a proven veteran like Stewart could be a sensible way for the Patriots to further strengthen a defense that is already among the NFL’s most reliable.
