Alabama’s Biggest Defensive Question May Finally Be Taking Shape
The answer to one of Alabama football’s biggest defensive questions may be closer than expected.

With only 18 days left before the Crimson Tide opens the 2026 season against East Carolina, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack indicated that Alabama is nearing a decision on its inside linebacker rotation.
That is significant given the uncertainty surrounding the position heading into fall camp.
The Crimson Tide must replace all three of its leading off-ball linebackers from a year ago. The current group includes transfers, freshmen and returning players hoping to earn expanded roles.
After 11 preseason practices, however, Wommack believes the competition is beginning to separate.
Alabama Closing In on Linebacker Rotation
Wommack has consistently suggested that Alabama will use multiple inside linebackers this season, and that plan appears to remain intact.
The defensive coordinator explained that Alabama typically relies on three or four primary linebackers to handle most of the snaps early in the season, while others may contribute in specialized situations.
“We always rotate a little bit,” Wommack said. “Typically, we’ve always had three or four main ‘backers that, to begin the season, are gonna take the majority of the snaps.”
The bigger development is that Alabama seems to be getting closer to identifying those three or four players.
Asked how close the Crimson Tide is to narrowing down the rotation, Wommack gave an encouraging response.
“We’re pretty close,” he said. “Yeah, pretty good spot there in terms of knowing what we’re going to get out of guys.”
That suggests one of Alabama’s biggest defensive competitions is finally beginning to come into focus.
Caleb Woodson Provides Valuable Experience
Caleb Woodson appears to be one of the more important pieces of the equation.
The Virginia Tech transfer brings considerable experience to an Alabama linebacker room that badly needs it. Woodson started 16 games during his time with the Hokies before arriving in Tuscaloosa.
Wommack has specifically praised Woodson, along with freshman Xavier Griffin, for putting themselves in position to contribute this season.
Given his experience, Woodson has a strong case to become one of the leaders of Alabama’s linebacker rotation.
The question now is who will join him.
Luke Metz Continues to Make His Case
One player who has generated plenty of attention during preseason practices is Luke Metz.
Wommack recently highlighted Metz while discussing the linebacker competition, noting that the sophomore has elevated his game.
That is particularly noteworthy because Metz was already viewed as one of the leading candidates for a starting job entering the offseason.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer has also praised Metz recently, adding to the growing momentum around the young linebacker.
If Metz continues developing at his current pace, he could emerge as one of the primary members of Alabama’s rotation.
Several Other Linebackers Remain in the Mix
The competition, however, is much broader than Woodson and Metz.
Wommack has also mentioned QB Reese, Cayden Jones, Abduall Sanders, Duke Johnson and Xavier Griffin as players who have impressed the coaching staff.
More importantly, Wommack indicated that the group should have meaningful roles this season.
“I’m impressed with that group,” Wommack said. “I think Luke Metz has taken his game to another level. I think you see a lot from Abduall Sanders, QB Reese. Cayden Jones is doing some nice things. Duke Johnson. Those guys are all gonna have a role for us.”
That is a strong endorsement of a linebacker room that entered camp with plenty of uncertainty.
It also helps explain why Alabama has yet to officially name its starters. The coaching staff has several players making strong cases for playing time.
A Four-Man Rotation Could Be the Answer
Rather than settling on two traditional starters, Alabama could ultimately lean on a core group of three or four linebackers.
That would fit Wommack’s approach during his first two seasons as Alabama’s defensive coordinator. The Crimson Tide has consistently rotated multiple inside linebackers, and there is little indication that philosophy will change in 2026.
The personnel may make that approach even more valuable this season.
Alabama is replacing substantial production at the position, while some of the players competing for snaps have limited college experience. Developing several reliable contributors could give Wommack greater flexibility while allowing the best performers to separate themselves once the season begins.
Alabama’s Decision Is Coming Soon
There is still some time before the season opener, but the deadline is approaching quickly.
Alabama will face East Carolina in less than three weeks, meaning the coaching staff must soon move from evaluating its options to preparing a defined group to play together.
That makes Wommack’s latest comments significant.
The linebacker competition may not be completely settled, but Alabama appears to have a much clearer picture than it did at the beginning of fall camp.
Woodson appears positioned to play a major role, while Metz continues to gain momentum. Several other linebackers have also done enough to remain firmly in contention.
The biggest question now is no longer whether Alabama has enough options.
It is which three or four linebackers will ultimately receive the majority of the snaps.
And based on Wommack’s comments, the Crimson Tide may be very close to finding out.
