Indianapolis Colts Makes Bold Move to Complete Recruiting Rebuild

Colts Add Hometown Hero in Trio of Roster Moves

Indianapolis made several roster changes, including the addition of a familiar face from Indiana.

The Indianapolis Colts made a series of roster moves Tuesday, releasing wide receiver E.J. Horton Jr. and offensive tackle Bayron Matos while placing tight end Carson Towt on injured reserve.

Indianapolis also announced three additions: offensive tackle Roy Mbaeteka, tight end Tyler Moore and former Indiana Hoosiers offensive tackle Trey Wedig.

Colts Add Offensive Line Depth

Mbaeteka joined the Colts after the team moved on from Matos, who saw very limited action during Indianapolis’ preseason opener against the New England Patriots.

The offensive tackle has yet to appear in an NFL regular-season game since joining the New York Giants’ practice squad in 2022. Since then, he has spent time with the Giants, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins.

With Luke Tenuta and Nolan Rucci currently dealing with injuries, Mbaeteka gives Indianapolis another body along the offensive line heading into its second preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

The timing of the move makes plenty of sense as the Colts continue searching for depth before the regular season.

Tyler Moore Adds Another Tight End

Indianapolis also signed rookie tight end Tyler Moore, who went undrafted after spending five seasons at Iowa State.

Moore appeared in 45 games for the Cyclones and primarily contributed as a blocker. He finished his college career with 21 receptions for 245 yards and two touchdowns.

The Colts needed additional depth at tight end after placing Towt on injured reserve.

Moore joins a tight end group that includes Tyler Warren, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree and Will Mallory. Veteran Pharoah Brown is also competing for a roster spot, so Moore will have plenty of competition as he tries to stick with the team.

Trey Wedig Returns to Indiana

The most intriguing addition may be Trey Wedig, who returns to the state after spending the 2024 season with the Indiana Hoosiers.

Wedig emerged during Curt Cignetti’s first season as Indiana’s head coach in 2024, when the Hoosiers made an unexpected run to the College Football Playoff.

Indiana ultimately lost to Notre Dame, which was led at the time by current Colts quarterback Riley Leonard.

Wedig was an important part of that historic Indiana team. He played 830 snaps and posted impressive Pro Football Focus grades, including an 83.5 overall grade, an 85.1 mark as a run blocker and a 74.2 pass-blocking grade.

After going undrafted in 2025, Wedig signed with the Los Angeles Rams. The team released him on August 24 of that year, and the Arizona Cardinals later picked him up before releasing him in December.

Now, Wedig gets another opportunity with the Colts and could have a legitimate chance to make an impression.

With Tenuta and Rucci dealing with injuries, Wedig should have an opportunity to show Colts offensive line coach Tony Sparano Jr. what he can do during the preseason.

Colts Preparing for Falcons

Indianapolis is preparing to host the Falcons at Lucas Oil Stadium this weekend for its second preseason matchup. The Colts will also hold two joint practices with Atlanta at Grand Park.

More roster moves are likely to follow as the preseason progresses and teams work toward finalizing their 53-man rosters.

For players such as Mbaeteka, Moore and Wedig, these preseason opportunities are especially important. Strong performances could potentially lead to a spot on Indianapolis’ active roster or practice squad.

If they make it through the next few days, all three newcomers could see the field Saturday against Atlanta.

For Wedig in particular, the opportunity carries an added element: the former Hoosier now has a chance to continue his football career close to home while competing for a place on the Colts’ roster.
