Titans Dealt Major Injury Ahead of Jets Opener
The Tennessee Titans have already suffered a significant setback before their season opener.
Titans linebacker Cedric Gray was involved in a UTV accident over the weekend and sustained a concussion along with minor injuries. According to NFL Insider Ari Meirov, Gray has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol with Week 1 against the New York Jets approaching.
The potential loss of Gray could have a major impact on Tennessee’s defense.
Titans analyst Drew Beatty described the situation as a major blow when asked about Gray’s absence.
“Pretty catastrophic for the defense,” Beatty said. “Thankful it’s only short-term. He’s grown into, in my opinion, a top-five inside linebacker in football and one of the core pillars of the defensive unit.”
Beatty also pointed to the challenge facing Tennessee’s linebacker corps, noting that veteran Cody Barton would likely see more responsibility while rookie Anthony Hill could be pushed into a starting role in his first NFL game.
Gray Likely to Miss Week 1
ESPN’s Turron Davenport reported that Gray was officially placed in the concussion protocol following the UTV accident. Davenport also noted that the incident did not involve reckless driving or alcohol.
The Titans released a statement confirming that Gray suffered a concussion and minor injuries and expressed hope that he would be able to return once he is fully healthy and clears the league’s protocol.
The NFL uses a five-step process for players returning from concussions. With Gray entering the protocol less than a week before the regular season begins, getting him cleared in time for Sunday appears unlikely.
Titans analyst Justin Melo echoed that expectation, calling the injury a significant setback and saying Tennessee will likely have to prepare for Week 1 without its starting linebacker.
Gray, 23, was selected by the Titans with the 106th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. His rookie season was limited to seven appearances, and he did not make a start.
His second season was a completely different story.
Gray emerged as one of Tennessee’s most important defensive players, starting 16 of 17 games. He finished the year with 164 tackles, four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, one sack, three quarterback hits and seven tackles for loss.
His 164 tackles ranked fourth in the NFL last season, according to ESPN.
Jets Could Take Advantage
While Gray’s injury is a major concern for Tennessee, it could provide an opportunity for the Jets.
New York is expected to emphasize the running game, and facing the Titans without one of their most productive young linebackers could make that task easier. The Jets are looking to improve after a difficult start last season, when they opened the year 0-7 and didn’t record their first victory until October 26.
Any advantage could be valuable for a team looking to turn things around.
Robert Saleh’s defensive philosophy is built around generating pressure with four pass rushers and putting the offense in position to succeed. A strong running game could help establish a reliable offensive foundation while also creating opportunities for play-action passes.
The Jets, however, have their own concerns in the backfield.
Breece Hall suffered a groin injury during training camp, while Isaiah Davis dealt with a knee injury. Both backs are expected to be available for Week 1, but neither has practiced in several weeks.
Braelon Allen Could See More Work
If Hall or Davis isn’t able to handle a full workload, second-year running back Braelon Allen could receive an increased role.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has expressed confidence that Allen can handle additional carries if necessary.
Glenn pointed out that Allen brings a different skill set to the offense and can be particularly effective in short-yardage and goal-line situations. He also believes Allen is capable of handling a workload of around 20 carries if called upon.
The Jets have several capable offensive weapons, including their running backs, receivers and tight ends. Glenn acknowledged that finding enough opportunities for everyone can be challenging, but he views having multiple players capable of contributing as a positive problem.
For the Jets, a heavier reliance on Allen could ultimately become part of their offensive plan. At the same time, Tennessee will have to adjust if Gray is unavailable, creating an early test for the Titans’ defense before the season has even begun.
