Giants Target Top Prep Shortstop in Latest MLB Mock Draft
The San Francisco Giants are set to strengthen their infield with a promising young talent in the 2025 MLB Draft’s first round.
This will be the first draft for Buster Posey as the new president of baseball operations, and he’s already demonstrated a willingness to make bold moves, both in the offseason and during the season.
Posey’s first major move was signing shortstop Willy Adames to the largest contract in franchise history, which was soon overshadowed by a blockbuster trade acquiring Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox. This trade left San Francisco needing to rebuild its farm system, which is crucial for developing young talent around future first baseman and top prospect Bryce Eldridge.
Additionally, Adames has yet to fully live up to his hefty contract, prompting the Giants to consider strengthening the shortstop position, whether through a future starter or a backup.
With the No. 13 overall pick, the Giants are expected to target prep shortstop Daniel Pierce from Mill Creek High School in Georgia, according to Baseball America’s latest mock draft by Carlos Collazo.
“I’ve been hearing a lot of prep shortstops here with the Giants, who, like the Rangers, could also be looking for a bat,” Collazo wrote. “Pierce, Steele Hall, Kayson Cunningham, and Gavin Kilen are among the top high school shortstops available. There’s some uncertainty about which of them will rise to the top, with no real consensus—it seems to vary from team to team.”
Pierce, currently ranked as the No. 13 prospect on MLB Pipeline, has been impressing scouts with his physical growth and rising draft stock. While the Giants have historically leaned toward collegiate talent, Posey’s leadership may lead to a shift in strategy, especially given the strength of this year’s prep hitting class, which offers a solid opportunity to land a future star.
