Oilers Reportedly Eyeing Young Eastern Conference Center
It comes as little surprise that the Edmonton Oilers are looking to strengthen their forward group, particularly at the center position.

However, a new report has added an interesting twist to Edmonton’s search. The Oilers are reportedly pursuing a young center from the Eastern Conference who could benefit from a change of scenery.
NHL insider Darren Dreger recently suggested that Edmonton is among the teams most interested in acquiring an Eastern Conference center who is looking for a fresh opportunity. Dreger stopped short of revealing the player’s identity, explaining that he did not want to interfere with the ongoing process.
“I’m not gonna mention the player’s name because I know it, and I don’t think that would be fair to the process.”
If Dreger’s comments on The Nielson Show are accurate, the Oilers could potentially be working toward a trade in the near future.
Dreger provided some additional clues about the mystery player, describing him as a young forward with considerable upside who is still trying to establish himself in the NHL.
The player, according to Dreger, has plenty of room to develop and has something to prove at the NHL level. He also indicated that Edmonton has been discussing the player with an Eastern Conference team for several weeks.
Dreger cautioned Oilers supporters against getting too excited, emphasizing that this is a player who is still attempting to demonstrate his long-term NHL value.
Those comments suggest Edmonton could be targeting a young player whose value has declined somewhat but who still has the potential to turn his career around.
Could Marco Kasper Be Edmonton’s Target?
One player who immediately fits some of the clues is Detroit Red Wings forward Marco Kasper.
It is important to stress that this is only speculation. There is currently no confirmation that Kasper is the player Dreger was referring to.
Still, Kasper’s situation makes him an intriguing possibility.
The 22-year-old entered last season with significant expectations in Detroit and appeared to be in position to compete for the Red Wings’ second-line center job behind Dylan Larkin. However, his difficult start to the campaign reportedly hurt his standing and raised questions about his future with the organization.
A move to Edmonton could potentially give Kasper the opportunity to reset his career.
The former eighth-overall selection is currently dealing with an injury, although indications suggest he may not be sidelined for an extended period.
Another factor that could make Kasper appealing to Edmonton is his current trade value. If his stock has fallen, the Oilers could potentially acquire a former highly regarded prospect without giving up a major package of assets.
Could Edmonton and New Jersey Make a Deal?
Another Eastern Conference player worth monitoring is New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer.
Mercer has also faced questions about his development in New Jersey. The Devils had hoped he could eventually establish himself as a second-line center, but that progression has not unfolded as expected.
There is, once again, no evidence confirming that Mercer is the player Dreger was discussing. Nevertheless, his name has appeared in trade speculation before, and his age and remaining potential could make him an attractive option for Edmonton.
The bigger question would be where Mercer fits into the Oilers’ lineup.
The most obvious role could be on the third line, although Edmonton could potentially consider him for a higher spot. That possibility becomes particularly interesting when the Oilers decide to play Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl together on the same line.
For now, the identity of the mystery center remains unknown.
However, Dreger’s comments indicate that Edmonton has been exploring this opportunity for several weeks, making it possible that the Oilers could make a move sooner rather than later.
