Duke Basketball Closing In on Another 5-Star Recruit
Jon Scheyer and the Duke Blue Devils could be on the verge of adding another elite prospect to their 2027 recruiting class.

Duke has recently picked up momentum on the recruiting trail and already has two commitments for the 2027 cycle. Australian point guard Luke Paul became the latest addition, joining five-star forward Kager Knueppel in Scheyer’s recruiting group.
Now, another highly rated prospect could be headed to Durham.
Asa Montgomery Emerging as a Duke Favorite
Five-star forward Asa Montgomery recently made an official visit to Duke, where he attended the program’s annual Countdown to Craziness event on Saturday night.
The visit appears to have strengthened Duke’s position in his recruitment. Following his trip to Durham, Montgomery received a Crystal Ball prediction to choose the Blue Devils.
The 6-foot-7 forward from Powder Springs, Georgia, is currently ranked No. 8 nationally and No. 3 among small forwards in the 2027 class, according to the 247Sports Composite.
Montgomery has quickly become one of the biggest risers in the recruiting cycle.
His recruitment has already included an extensive list of visits. Before traveling to Duke, he visited LSU, Georgia Tech, UConn, North Carolina, and Florida. He is also scheduled to visit Arizona and Louisville following his trip to Durham.
Montgomery has an existing connection to Duke through freshman Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje. The two played together for Team USA at the FIBA U17 World Cup during the summer, where Montgomery averaged 9.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while helping the United States capture the gold medal.
There is also a recent Duke recruiting precedent involving Countdown to Craziness. Former five-star recruit and current Blue Devil freshman Cameron Williams attended the event for his official visit last year before eventually committing to Duke.
Why Montgomery Would Be a Strong Addition for Duke
Adding Montgomery would make considerable sense for Duke, particularly now that Paul has joined the 2027 class.
The Blue Devils already appear to have strong guard depth. All four of their current guards could potentially return for the 2027-28 season, while Paul is viewed as a potential future NBA Draft lottery selection.
That gives Duke more flexibility to focus on adding size and versatility on the wing.
The Blue Devils remain interested in other talented 2027 wing prospects, including Demarcus Henry and AJ Williams. However, Montgomery has emerged as one of the class’s most notable recent risers.
His combination of scoring ability, rebounding potential, and defensive upside makes him an intriguing fit for Scheyer’s program.
Nothing has been finalized yet, but the latest Crystal Ball prediction puts Duke in a strong position. For now, Montgomery appears to be one of the biggest names to watch as the Blue Devils continue building their 2027 recruiting class.
Duke currently does not have another official visit scheduled with a 2027 prospect.
